Found an answer for those interested.
This can absolutely be played as a first entry in the series and it is apparently suited to RPG first-timers as well.

Also the PSP even has the first 2 Tengai Makyou games on it! Is PSP the best console of all time? I think yes.
I hope they're still interesting even if I don't know much Japanese history.
