/vr/ - Retro Games

So I'm on my first replay of Quake in about 20 years. I'm making a point to complete the game on normal difficulty without any cheats, as this will be my first time doing so (only ever played on Easy with occasional cheats). Damn this game is hard!! Being able to save wherever you want is a great feature, and it's the only thing keeping me going. There are sections of the game that I've had to repeat over a dozen times because I'll just get surrounded by insanely powerful enemies and ripped to shreds in seconds. Thankfully I've only got three more dungeons left, but jeez! If anyone on here is looking for a challenge, it's a great one.

Does anyone want to play some quakeworld with me? We can set up a /vr/ server and play ffa at a predetermined time and IP.

Also what are your favorite multiplayer maps

Reasons why quake sucks from people who say it sucks:

Sure playing a 4-player FPS on a console was unheard of at the time, but you have to share the same TV screen with three of your idiot friends/siblings.

That's what made the atmosphere so great. The "music" was mostly tapping on drums or chimes, really chill and unobtrusive. Love this game.

Quake always creeped me out when I was younger.

Hey guys, I'm new here.
Is there a best of list for Quake mods? Played the shit out of it and I was wondering if there were more missions than the base game that I should check out.

Didn't see anything apart from Doom related stuff in the sticky, sorry if I overlooked anything.

I want to write a book about the history of the 1st person shooter, particularly the history of modding, deathmatches, and the culture around PC gaming from the 90s to the early 2000s.

Obviously this is going to focus heavily on DOOM and Quake.

Has such a thing been done? What books/sourses can /vr/ reccomend as compulsory reading?

Hey so I bought Quake on steam and was wondering why when I add joequake to the steamapps/common/quake folder that it won't show the option to launch joequake like it does for quake.exe, quakeworld.exe and the gl versions of those two. Is there a way to change this so my speedrunning hours count in with the rest of the hours I've spent playing Quake, thanks in advance.

Do you guys know where I can find a good quake 1 rom for n64? All the ones I have found thus far have been glitchy as fuck.
