Here is the original, intended art (by WolfTeam's Yoshiaki Inagaki) for Tale Phantasia before it was replaced and revised by Fujishima for Tales of. Klarth was also in, though known as "The Green Summoner".

Note that Inagaki also designed the sprites and graphics that made it into the final SNES version of Tales of Phantasia. These sprites were redesigned and replaced by Kosuke Fujishima for subsequent versions of the game, such as on PS1.

Personally, I can't bring myself to play anything other than the SNES version because it's the only one with Inagaki's comfy character sprites.

In case you don't know the history, Namco fucked over the original dev team, who left and founded Tri-Ace. Tales was the team's lifelong passion project. They wrote the game engine and the script, which was originally an epic generation-spanning novel. They shopped the game around to publishers before landing at Namco. Namco took over the game, removed their names from the credits, and turned Tales into a cash cow franchise.

Namco replaced the original artist Inagaki with Fujishima, the guy from Oh My Goddess. That's why the character designs for the SNES in-game sprites look totally different from the promo art and all the remakes.

Not the anon you're replying to, but could I request that you draw one of the Tales of Phantasia girls's original designs that the SNES sprites are based on? They were replaced in the official artwork by the time the game came out, and would eventually be replaced with sprites that match said official artwork in the PS1 and GBA remakes.

It's a really specific and obscure request but I love the original art style both in the artwork that the original artist released and the in-game sprites. There's probably no fanart of them in existence.

I like the original character designs in the SNES version used for the sprites more than the final official designs, which were then used for the PSX version.

Kinda weird how sprite Klaus and artwork Klaus look absolutely nothing alike but they expected nobody to notice.

I've got an enormous soft spot for the original character designs for Tales of Phantasia, the ones that the character sprites are based on before they changed the official artwork and expected nobody to notice that the two versions of Klaus look absolutely nothing alike.

I find it really bizarre how Tales of Phantasia clearly used these designs for its sprites, and then for the official art used character designs that don't match them in the slightest.

The transition to PS was so weird.

The future arc is much better than the past act, there are relevant side quests, the world is way more open, and you get nice rewards by visiting pretty much any of the many optional areas. Plot is still pretty shitty.

>>3458295
Makes me wish they would remake the game as originally intended, with 3 protagonists and their respective viewpoints of the plot.

Might as well post a few from Tales of Phantasia.

Also the opening theme, considering Wolf Team somehow managed to get a song with legible (Japanese) lyrics on an SNES game, in addition to voicing for the major characters. Not sure if any other SNES game quite managed that.

Just wanted to bring up that the original version of Tales of Phantasia, a previous game they'd made as Wolf Team for the SNES, not only had character voicing, but also managed to have an introductory song with legible (Japanese) lyrics. Not sure any other SNES game managed that.

Actually really need to give the Star Ocean series a try myself sometime.

Phantasia SNES, while quite good for it's time, is admittedly a bit dated. The flow of combat wound up reasonably improved in the PS1 remake, and was made extremely fluid in Eternia, to the point nearly all the subsequent games at least follow Eternia's flow at the basic level, making it feel quite fun to play.

Destiny PS1, Tales of Phantasia PS1, and Eternia (Also called Destiny II in the US) all use the "random encounter with real time battles" combat style, though most other later games in the series have an enemy icon on the map/overworld that touching initiates battle, as opposed to random battles.

>>1636498
Wasn't the Star Ocean team (at least for the older games) made of a lot of the same people that has originally worked on Phantasia SNES? Wolf Team, or whatever they'd been going by.

PS1 remake is currently the most up to date one with an English translation. Absolute Zero's working on a full translation for the Narikiri Dungeon X bundle, but who knows when they'll be finished. Avoid the GBA version at all costs.

Not him, but I have seen some people angered that the spells no longer interrupt combat in at least one of the PSP games. Something about it removing some of the importance spells felt like they had or something. Strikes me as weird.

>>1338047
Eh, I still feel that the party's designs had some charm to them, at least in the early concept art prior to switching from Inagaki to Fujishima. Not that I dislike Fujishima's designs, but still. Makes me wonder what Inagaki's been doing, provided he's still around.
