Did the same for most of my live up untill college, also movies, music and fiction books, but mostly games, basically anything that wasn't studying:
>Playing games every day, doing homework in the last possible moment
>family: "Anon, we are happy to help you with your studies but you are going to have trouble in the future if you keep up like that"
>college, phonographic production
>homework actually damand a lot more
>"meh, i can do it"
>drag myself through most of it
>shit is getting actually hard now, will have to present a final paper in a year, everyone already started working on theirs, i have no idea what to talk about
>a few intership groups show up in college, you would work for a teacher and help produce in exchange for credits
>first teacher turns me down, i was not that good at recording
>second teacher turns me down, i was not that good at editing video
>"fuuck, i'm not going to get any credits nor finish my paper..."
>regreting all that time playing and reading about games...
>third teacher calls me for an interview
>teacher: So Anon, what games you like?
>WAIT, WHAT? (family couldn't believe either)
>next few hours debating 90'a and 2000's games, occasionally movies and music
>teacher: here's the deal Anon, we are going to produce audio for games, want to work with us?
>HELL YEAH
>spend next year working with game audio
>realise i'm now studying without feeling it, quite gaming for reading about games and gaming
>decide to talk about game audio on my paper
>same teacher (who's a real bro) becomes my advisor
>debate with him all day every day about game audio
>some stuff i said ends up in his doctorate paper
>my paper gets straight 10 across the board
>teacher: Anon, you have what it takes, you should have your own master's degree
>keep writing about game audio, the university likes it
>now working on my master's degree about sound immersion in games

Everything went better than expected.

Just reinstalled one of my favorite games after years without playing, feels good.
