Don't know if it was mentioned before but let me throw in my two cents.

Sonic Adventure 1 is the most playable game due to it's level design. It has some bigger areas to play around in, and while it's not like "a huge 3D environment" to explore, it gave the pretension that the level you were going through was bigger than you actually think it is, making it feel less on rails as a result.

Sonic Adventure 2, besides the TERRIBLE Master Emerald sequences, was nothing but a on rails experience from beginning to end, with various sized hallways.
