It's fun for what it is, there's a ton of grinding and, besides a few factors like Guardian Stars, there's not much too it besides "big numbers win" really... but I like it, it has style, excellent OST and overall atmosphere, the cards are so much fun to use, especially for fans, and when you get the hang of fusions, and how they're mostly about card type/attribute, it's so fun!

Of course, keep in mind, the CPU can be a pain, there's tons of difficulty spikes and a grind for overcoming it can take many hours... but it's a very fun adventure anyways, a favorite of mine.

I'd say Forbidden Memories is good, but there's also the sequel, Duelist of the Roses, which, at least to me, is more fleshed out and also more fun to play through, I like it better than the real OCG/TCG rules even and wish we would've got much more out of this playing style. Also, it's a stunning title that sounds good and has style... yet again. Another option is all of the GBA stuff.

I personally enjoy the charm and simplicity of these older titles, especially the ones that have their own rules like FM, DotR and DDS, so much better than the garbage real Yu-Gi-Oh! became.

I loved this one, one of the few Yu-Gi-Oh! video games from the time I played where there isn't this obvious superior deck that's just a group of the better cards at the time, I actually tried out different decks and it made replays a lot more fun since I'd try out different strategies and use different cards to get to the end, I still love my Wind Dragon/Harpie deck, also my Insect deck.

>"Bad" retro games that you considered good
Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters (Game Boy)
I know what the complaints are, and I find them fair, but I don't think it's enough for this to be bad, at least not for fans of the franchise. What most people complain about is how cards are acquired, with some of them requiring you to replay duel 100x for a single card, and others being locked behind duels with the Game Boy's Link system, 200x duels this time... yes, it's ridiculous and I wish it had a store where you could trade currency for cards like some sequels had... but that's about it, other complaints relate to the simplicity, due to there being no Trap cards, no Levels and therefore no Tributes, no Effects... and while I get that, I don't find the simplicity in this to be bad, I actually love the deckbuilding variety, it clearly wants players to pick a theme, to then power up your cards with Field and Equip cards, which adds replay value... this is also the only Duelist Kingdom RPG we've ever gotten, which is a waste, but at least we have something, wish this would get a modern remake or something to fix the issues, but they'd probably ruin it in the proccess... it's a fun time.

>examples of games that are very soulful but not very good otherwise?
Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories (1999/PS1)
I love it... but it's mediocre.

This is actually giving me ideas.
>Duelist Kingdom arc open island RPG
>card pool is of the era
>day-night cycle
>you can have normal battles with random npc duelists during the day
>field power bonuses
>player killers(eliminators) roam during the night and try to hunt you down
>you can try to hide from them or risk a game over by dueling them
>major duels from the manga/anime start at 8000 LP and reward star chips that open the castle
>normal duels at 4000 LP to keep a good game flow and reward some sort of points/currency that can be spent at a traveling merchant to purchase card packs or even perks(like skills in Duel Links) which can be used in normal battles only
>major duels can be unlocked by fulfilling certain tasks(dueling a certain number of normal duelists, fishing mini game to duel Mako, etc.)
>finals can be Pokémon elite four style
>challenge mode after finishing game which prevents save scum and updates decks with modern support, modern card packs available from merchant

I grew up playing this, so I'm definitely biased, I'll admit it right now, but this one has some superb OST and aesthetics even today, that really makes you feel immersed... but to me, the highlight of it all has to be when you go from shrine to shrine in an attempt to defeat the High Mages... they're all way more difficult than any previous opponent in the adventure so far, and they're the first that do want to kill you if they win... it feels dark, and for some time now your mentor, Simon, and both of your parents, are already dead... it feels lonely, as if you've already lost most of what was dear, and now you're just trying to not lose all of it, and yet these shrines... they feel so peaceful, beautiful I think, the OST and aesthetics once again excell at selling you the mood.

I miss when card games video games would try to be proper RPGs with stories and with the cards in it essentially functioning as your levels and XP, in the 90's and 2000's we had Shandalar for Magic, the GBC duology for Pokémon, and a ton of titles for Yu-Gi-Oh! All of these were RPGs where you could move around a world, interacting with other characters and progressing a story. Nowadays all we have is online CCG clients for people to spend on microtransactions and play ranked matches like any other PvP video game... it's dull.

SDD is really special, it really makes the player feel like part of Battle City, however to me it does a better job at it than TSC as that had you essentially replace Yugi/Atem as the main character, which just doesn't feel right, especially in this particular arc, however in SDD you're one of Yugi's friends and your main plot is essentially something that would be a side plot in the manga/anime, which is ideal. I definitely recommend going for the Graceful Charity pack early, to get, well... Graceful Charity, but also Gemini Elf and Mechanicalchaser, some of the best Lv. 4s you'll be able to get.

I've always known that the CPU was a cheating bastard in FM... and this video has frustrated me ever since I 1st laid eyes on it, because it confirmed all of those suspicions... anyways I still love FM as its simple rules are charming to me, reminds me of Duelist Kingdom, and it has some of the best atmosphere in any Yu-Gi-Oh! video game.

>>9704516
I'd recommend replaying TSC if its been a long time since you've last played it, as it is one of my favorites even today. If you want something with similar rules to TSC, then the sequel works, were it not know for its punishing difficulty, I'd go for a ROM hack that makes it tolerable... there's also DDS, which is simpler, as it has no world to go around, but dueling is fun, there's also EDS and SDD on GBA, and both FM or DotR for Sony consoles.

I feel the same, often I try to get into current Yu-Gi-Oh! especially after Master Duel came out, because of how polished it is, with animations, graphics and cosmetics, so many cards to choose from... but nowadays there are so many summoning mechanics, the power creep is unreal, every card has to do a dozen things and interact with other cards that do a dozen things, all of it explained in paragraphs of microscopic text... I'm fine with the DM era, some early GX and/or 5Ds too, Zexal onwards is just not good.
