it derives from school years, nerds and dorks are eternally bitter and angry because they were the corner kids at school, they build this bizarre paradoxical uniform individuality and claim the "jocks" etc are all against them and dont understand cus they're all dumb, they carry this bitterness through life and hate to see anybody thrive or do well as it reminds them of their own inferiority and thus this is why you have a scene where secretly they all hate each other and won't respect achievements of fellow men but will glorify everyone living the same low shitty life as they do to feel better about being a waste.
