Athena: Awakening from the Ordinary Life is an adventure for the Playstation. The Year 2000, scientists find neutronium deep inside the Earth. All kinds of technology are made from it: including long extinct species brought back to life. But technology and animals are not the only thing to be effected by neutronium. Meet Athena an ordinary high school girl. When her friend Rika forgets her tickets to the aquarium, Athena has a vision to as where they are located. Over the course of the next few days Athena develops more & more psychic powers. The main gameplay is like a typical fixed camera survival horror game. The main game mechanic is Athen's psychic ability, which can range from using psychometry to find hidden items, telepathy to read people minds & find important clues, to psychic barriers so that she can defend herself from attack. The way this works is that you are given a certain pattern, similar to an EKG reading and you have to hit Square or Triangle at the right time to activate the ability. If you fail, you lose health. If you lose all your health, you die. The main problem with the game is that if you are not really good at Japanese you are going to miss A LOT of the story. All the FMV cutscenes, besides the intro, are in Japanese. The main problem is the in-game cutscenes; they use text to relay the story but the dialogue is set on a timer, so sometimes 2 words could be displayed for 5 seconds, and an entire complex sentences could on be displayed for 1 second. I'm am fluent in Japanese and even I had a hard time sometimes picking up what they were saying. Also because of the lack of action, especially in the beginning, and a lot of backtracking many people will find this game really boring. Once you get halfway through the game though it really picks up. I'd say if you're Japanese is good, or you just don't care about the story, then at least give it a play.
