/vr/ - Retro Games

I've always hated sonic. The sloppy movement and unfair enemies/traps just made it feel like a bad joke to me. I asked for advice here, and everybody told me to fuck off and go play something else.
But I realized two things recently that have made me enjoy the game much more, and recently it's been my go-to podcast game:
>save states ruin the intended experience of repeating the levels many times
>picking up rings and making an effort in the bonus stages is important
The game is really designed around limited lives and playing over and over again. As you master earlier levels, you accumulate more lives through 100 ring bonuses, as well as continues on the bonus stages, which creates a feedback loop that makes the repetition actually rewarding rather than repetitive and mind-numbing the way it would be in Mario. If somebody had explained this to me a few months ago, I could have been enjoying it all this time, instead of just being pissed off and confused.
