Beyond Oasis and it's big bro Legend. Though I guess you're not totally alone because you have cool elemental friends to do things like turn rats into delicious cooked hunks of meat.

They're very different games. Really calling Beyond Oasis a Zelda clone doesn't fit very well. I like that it's mostly a brawler where you use your elementals and different weapons to manage the combat. I've played through both games many times at this point. Meanwhile for whatever reason Zelda has never really clicked with me. The only one I finished was Link's Awakening and in part because I had lots of free time and only a few Gameboy games. Link to the Past I've tried many times and just get bored. The combat is dull and the puzzles aren't enough to keep me engaged. The other one I liked was Wind Waker but when the last dungeon was a rehash of the earlier dungeons I got bored again and never finished.

Not to say there's anything bad about Zelda, it's just not my cup of tea but calling either the Oasis games, Rayearth, Secret of Mana etc Zelda likes doesn't fit.

It's like Zelda mixed with a brawler. Good fun if that appeals, and there's an awesome 100 floor bonus dungeon with good equipment. Play the Jap ir NA versions though if you can, the Pal is weirdly laggy for some reason. One of favorite games on genesis.

It's funny, as much as I love both Ecco games and always have a replay of each on the go, I almost didn't include them in the list because they're so specific and turn most people off. Still, everyone may as well try it.

I think Beyond and Legend of Oasis are fantastic, but none of the Zeldas have quite done it for me. They're more puzzle oriented but rarely interesting. Crusader of Centy is a more straight action RPG but it's combat is even more boring and the game just feels like a slog.

They're all very different games despite seeming similar on the surface. Landstalker is much more of a Zelda clone, based around puzzles with some minor progression elements. Solei / Crusader of Centy is a regular action rpg and the worst of the three in my opinion, everything is pretty basic.

Beyond Oasis is personally my favorite. It's sort of like mixing Zelda with Streets of Rage. It's much more action focused with minimal element based puzzles and limited progression, mostly just in weapons. There's a 100 floor bonus dungeon that can earn you very powerful items if you do it. It also has a few neat little features. For example killing animals like rats will get them to drop meat which you can use to heal. But if you or your elementals kills them with fire they will drop cooked meat which heals even more. It's full of neat little touches like that.

I absolutely love both of them, but they're quite different from Zelda. Almost like and Action Adventure mixed with a brawler. Less puzzles and more action, especially Beyond with it's 100 floor bonus dungeon. It's Zelda that I don't care much for, it's just different strokes.

Careful though, I think the Japanese version is called Story of Thor as well, but it's also the name of the PAL version which runs at a different frame rate or something and makes the whole game janky. There used to be a guy here who would rag on it really hard saying it played like shit and I never knew what he was talking about till I decided to try the Euro release on a whim to see if anything was different other than the name and it was nigh unplayable by comparison.

At least try Ecco the Dolphin. It's not for everyone, but is super unique and it might click with you.

Beyond Oasis is like Zelda mixed with a Beat Em Up, tons of fun and there's even a 100 floor bonus dungeon

Ranger X is a great straight up mecha action game

Comix Zone is like a puzzle/beat em up and is definitely worth at least trying

Herzog Zwei is a proto-RTS and is fantastic once you get the hang of it

Granada is a super fun swarm heavy multidirectional shooter

Gaiares is in my opinion one of the best console shmups of it's time. Great upgrade system where you suck different kinds of weapons out of different enemies, great levels and bosses and a good challenge.

Phantasy Star IV is in my opinion probably the best RPG of the 16 bit era. If you're going to play one more, play it.

Shining Force 1 and 2 are decent light fun if you enjoy SRPGs as well.

Fantasy Zone 2 is another shooter, but so good it's still worth mentioning.

Flashback is another of those "you have to at least try it" games I love it, but it can be an acquired taste.

Jurassic Park and Rampage Edition are quite different but in my opinion both still really fun. I almost always play the raptor.

Alien Soldier is an action boss rush kind of game, pure adrenaline if you can dig it.

I don't like the normal Sonic games, but Sonic Spinball is a legitimately quite fun and challenging game.

If you like Puzzle games, Puyo Puyo is easily one of the best.

That should get you started.

You probably don't want action RPGs, but rather Zelda style action Adventures. Give Beyond and Legend of Oasis a try. Even further from RPGs than Zelda, it's an AA with the focus even more on action being almost like a brawler at points. Though they do have some neat puzzle elements. Two of my favorite games, highly recommended.

Beyond Oasis is one of my favorite games of the retro era, half the times you ever see it mentioned on this board It's me shilling it. But it's an action game with some minor puzzle elements, it's basically Zelda mixed with a brawler, it really doesn't have any RPG elements at all.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but having played every retro era one and most of the non-retro ones it's my favorite game in the series. Though I don't think the series is all that great overall. I quite like it.

The point of genres is to categorize similar games together, that being accurate is far more important than the specific words being used. Most genre category names are pretty bad if you examine them hard enough.

Beyond Oasis, Alien Soldier, Comix Zone and Galaxy Force 2 are all absolutely top notch in my opinion.

I personally really like Spinball but wouldn't recommend it to everyone.

Hey man I'm as close to a fan of Sega as any company out there (not a huge fan of Nintendo or Sony) but I think the remade version looks much better. Not that the gameboy was bad, but the new visuals are deffinitely an improvement. Don't lump me in with idiots like him.
