nintendo alienated third parties with their censorship, restrictive rules and sky-high licensing fees (which they insisted on maintaining through the n64 era by sticking with cartridges). for jrpgs in particular, nintendo had also suppressed the genre's appeal in the west by cockblocking certain games (i.e. ff5) and refusing to promote the ones that did make it out of japan. the n64's hardware was also too primitive to handle any rpg with decent production values.

FF7 didn't go to the N64 because the N64 couldn't handle it.

Yeah, but wave race 64 is nothing special. Just has pretty water.

...he said, while making a shitload of money off pokemon. he was just salty that square wasn't making games for their underpowered shitbox.

with ff7 in particular, the n64's hardware also wasn't well-suited to run the game. they tried, and it just wasn't working.

nice conspiracy theory, but square themselves stopped working on ff7 for the n64 because the hardware couldn't support what they were trying to do.
sega didn't get third-party support because they were a dysfunctional dumpster fire, whereas sony was offering a stable platform.
