There are plenty of ways to handle rioters. Nerve staple for an immediate fix but it does have repercussions.
Psych facilities and secret projects are the best ways to handle rioters as they keep more of your population docile allowing them to work or be reassigned as anything other than a doctor.
If you population is huge and psych facilities aren't helping then you will have to reassign your workers as doctors. On the city screen click on a square you have a worker on and by default he should be a doctor.
The last thing you can do is change your budget on the social engineering screen. You can put more cash into psych and I generally only touch this for activating a golden age. Golden age happens when your psych is high enough that a large enough of your population read the manual bro

As you can see their is a ton of ways to handle a situation and alot of details that are easy to miss. So much so that your never really going to have a smooth ride your first time through. Best advice I can give you is to try to push through and just enjoy the fantastic dialogue and wonderfully spooky cut scenes. Click around and see what does what.

Most of this stuff will make more sense if you played civilization 2. If Alpha centauri seems too complex you should consider trying out civ 2 first. It's still a solid game just remember civ 2 gold has an ai bug that makes all ai super aggressive meaning even ghandi will try to nuke you if you don't try to please him in every possible way. The bug was patched by fans and is easy to find if you search for it.

Alpha Centauri weirdly enough takes place after the player accomplishes a science victory in civ 2 by building a rocket to Alpha Centauri so they can escape the shithole that is earth.

The factions in SMAX, from what I can tell, act as mixtures of the other factions

e.g. Planet Cult = Believers + Gaians
Madly hardcore religious, devoted to Planet

Data Angels = University + Morgan

Cyborgs = University + Hive

Free Drones = Hive + Spartans

The only one I can't place is the pirates. They're just plain watery

Honestly, I don't know since I don't play any new ones
