there was a lot more neon and stuff in film in the 80s than there were in previous decades, with films like star wars and tron and blade runner which were hugely influential. I looked up a while ago out of curiosity where the 80s neon grid thing came from and apparently it started appearing in media like commercials and magazines etc a lot after star wars and that trench run scene which had a computerised wireframe animation. Clothing started becoming high contrast flat neon-esque colors too which you don't really much see anymore. These days there's such a use of all kinds of colors i think it all just blends together, instead of having bright colors but less of them like in the 80s. But yeah it wasn't exactly everywhere, but it was noticeable
