OP here. Still draggin' my feet without mah little green gerbils. If any of you faggots live in the NC triangle, and are into that shit, you should let me know.

I've converted the boxes from background tiles to sprites that are influenced by gravity. They fall up and down with vrtan, but I haven't programmed vrtan-box interactions yet, so they pass through each other. If you press R you can see the CPU usage visualization, and you can see I'm starting to use a sizeable chunk of time. I'm sure the full game will be fast enough optimization (which it could use a lot of).

Baby steps, but at least the progress is steady.
