> I can use any SNES/GC S-Video cable on a PAL N64
Dude, read the thread. Or even just this - >>2332378 On a CRT the PAL N64 will just wash out like the brightness is on 500%. Even then I'm not sure you can use an NTSC AV cable instead, do the NTSC ones have the 75ohm termination built in?

>>2332401
Only the later ones. The normal dark grey ones output S-Video just fine. It's a nice jump in quality, and the cable mod is a good place to start learning.

KMD is almost certainly shit.

Also, remember that if you have a PAL N64 you need a special cable for CRT. Any NTSC one will need either a system mod or a cable adjustment, see pic. Most LCD's will work fine as is due to converting the signal to digital and levelling the brightness. (LCD will look like shit for other reasons though.)

Incorrect, sir! You might get away with a single resistor, but properly the console (or cable, as long as the components are in the loop somewhere) wants one 75Ohm resistor to ground each for the y and C lines, and then some caps too. Pic related.

Speak for yourself ;) In Aus/NZ we got royally shafted. No SCART over here, unless you were into specialised AV equipment. No S-Video either, until the late 90's and the N64. Very few TV's had S-Video even until after 2000. And GL finding a Chinese modded N64 PAL S-Video cable that actually worked. A mate of mine had the only one i ever saw.

I don't expect a response to this because it's a fairly niche problem that no one with the right expertise seems to know or care about. As a disclaimer I have googled a lot for this and I can't find a definitive solution but maybe I'm just missing something.

All PAL N64s need 4 components to be either added to the motherboard or added to the cable to output s-video properly. Nintendo was cheap and took them out in production. My pic shows what pieces are missing and where to add them
However there is one motherboard revision that seems to be very uncommon yet just so happens to be what I have. It's serial is NUS-CPU(P)-03-1
From what I've read Nintendo wired the Chroma and Luma signals on this motherboard straight to ground and the problem might be fixed if that connection were cut as well as adding the missing components. And that's all I've learned. I'm not 100% sure what it means either.

Anyway just throwing that out there. If people become interested in this issue I'll take apart my N64 and post a photo of my motherboard because there doesn't seem to be any good images of this revision out there.
