DLC was not a new concept and it was a cool thing which expanded upon the games we enjoyed. Back then, I didn't get paying for access on top of already paying an ISP, which was appalling because the Dreamcast's online was basically connecting the wire into the adapter and entering your ISP which was exactly the same as it was on PCs.

The DLC I really remembered on Dreamcast were all offered for free. I particularly remember the move pack for Fire Pro Wrestling D was promoted with a few static images, one of a move called "muscle buster" which my friends were laughing at how f'ed the victim was just from the static image.

The devs should be rewarded for their hard work and artistry. It is nice to have more of a good thing.

They are stories after the Death Star missions, and include a new ship. A bonus is the TOPACE save which is a 100% save of the prior missions to allow for any stage to be replayed as a historical battle simulation.

That is an aspect which made some of the official strategy guides of the day nice: they are from the perspective of someone in-universe of the games. You don't have to start from the beginning, since you can just pick and choose which parts to look up. There are some game designer interviews as well which are interesting tidbits on the development.

The expansions fill in the story which lead into Tie Fighter. I think you will like Tie Fighter a lot more since the conditions for success is a lot more lenient.

A quarter is the right price for a fleeting moment of fun, but a dollar or so +tax is a lot more money which could go to things like rent or food.

This. Part of the greatness of Tie Fighter is not only the gameplay and visual improvements, but just the perspective shift to playing the other side. X-Wing pretty much introduced me to the franchise but I wasn't fanatical about the series as the media portrayed others seemed to be. At least the two KOTOR games were mentioned.

Yep, but I prefer to wait for the complete editions to hit the clearance bins.

I don't know. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, I guess.

Sounds like there are more options in its trade system, and that all sounds great. A shame the combat doesn't have the feel right. I intend on trying it after I get enough to finish my J-Win98SE build.

Yeah, that video was released last year on April 1st. It came from the devs of another space-sim game, and I suppose with their talented art team plus good memories, minus the rights to Privateer, they just crafted a very cool concept. A shame I found it amusing, but also a sort of twisting of the knife.

Yeah, starting at the top means there's nowhere to go but down from there. There are still plenty of good games based on the franchise.

I couldn't afford a flightstick for the computer at the time. The original SoundBlaster and a dot matrix printer were costly enough. The framerate achieved by the 4MBs of RAM in that 386DX-40 was already crying in those days. I have a 486DX4-100 now, and I really should look into a good flightstick for the gameport. Maybe I could finally conquer the game.

I'm actually impressed. I had that sentiment as well, as at one point I felt people were simply just "Windows literate" instead of "computer literate" but that's no longer necessary these days. Granted, I do have fun trying to make my grandkids be the tech support with "get all the Chinese spying bloat off my damn phone" and when they can't I'd give them the ol' "in my day, I made the shit work for my grandparents" speech, and change the damn ROM myself, they get a kick out of it.

You're making me a bit nostalgic for the times now. IRC was another place where I'd get the warez and type about the anime. Great stuff, but I am sure the grandkids would not survive my day. It is nice they get all the stuff I like better and cheaper now if they choose.

I may one day get a flight stick, since I loved playing Wing Commander 2, Privateer, X-Wing, Tie Fighter, etc. I always figured they'd feel nice using one in conjunction with all the buttons needed from a keyboard.

Will joy2key eat up resources? Like sit in the system tray. That .PIF file is a "reboot to DOS" but with added options to load CD-ROM, mouse, expanded mem EMM386, extended mem, or conventional mem. So Windows will not be running in the background (to my knowledge), thus Joy2Key may not work.

>>4064535
I do not intend on playing many Win98SE aside from the ones I named here >>4064510 this 486DX4 is primarily for DOS games. I still need to find a way to free up about 15k more in RAM for sound in some games, so I should find a way to load some things to HIMEM, right?

Oh yeah, I forgot visual novels, those can be pretty inexpensive at this time. Some can be pretty good, but they still stay cheap.

>>3741020
Yeah, I can get if a genre is not someone's thing. I just can't label a whole genre as "shit" for instance I don't play too many flight simulators, but I loved the Wing Commander and X-Wing/Tie Fighter titles back in their days, so I can't call that genre shit as there are likely more of what I like there.

As for WWF: No Mercy, I still enjoy it. I had great times with friends creating goofy trailer trashy characters with silly/stupid storylines and letting the computer determine outcomes, in a sort of RPG way. It is very fun to play as well, especially in multiplayer, but it was never a chore for me even playing single player to unlock additional contents. The play mechanics I think hold up, but I also like the modern ones like WWE All-Stars as well.

Thanks, that's the problem with me reusing old pics if I didn't get it right the first time, the mistake will always be there. I was just trying to be funny and guess it is more funny to know how stupid I am. Hard to believe I spent over a decade in classes for the language, and having not used it in many more decades since I really did lose it. I guess the same can be said of my ability in videogames, I think I got worse at that too.

I thought the thread was about when 5th Gen was new. So I was referring to the 3D0, Jaguar, and CDi. At that time, it was really easy for me to stick with what I already had, in part due to limited resources, but also those systems failed to captivate me.

Aside from the trade show where I first tried out CDi, I also remember the demo kiosks in a local store called "Service Merchandise" which focused on its multimedia functions rather than games.

I think the Babbages had some demo kiosks of the 3D0 and I was honestly underwhelmed. Though these days, I kind of want a 3D0 for Suchie Pai and Road Rash, just cannot afford them.

I've already described my Jaguar experience in >>3685235 ... tho I do remember some people playing Alien Vs. Predator, but at that time I had already experienced Wolf3D and Doom on DOS.

The Virtual Boy was a curio, but I guess the "Boy" moniker made me think of the GameBoy, and I was not into portables until after what would be categorized as "Gen 5." So that too did not impress me.

Also polygons weren't exactly amazing to me, I just viewed them as another way to render things. Like one can get more visible angles at an enemy ship in X-Wing than the scaled pixel art ships in Wing Commander 1&2. However as mentioned, the polygons lacked detail at the time and texture maps still were low res (nothing wrong with that, just a limitation of the time, and can be charming of a look if the art design calls for it, like the Megaman Legends games). These days, polygons plus all the shaders do yield impressive results to me, most recently, ramp shaders with adjusted normals to achieve the look Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- has.

Happy ending is that the Playstation, Saturn, N64, and Dreamcast did get me fully engaged into the generation. The Saturn ended out to be on of my most favorite systems.
