Nintendo did offer them, but lately there's been higher quality cables made by independent individuals. S-video was the high quality consumer connection back then as I remembered with Laserdiscs and SVHS players.

I too used RGB cables in the JP21 format back then, which is pretty uncommon since everything is SCART now. Since I didn't have a TV, and relied on hand-me-downs, I relied on using a computer monitor and used the XRGB2 to play my console games for entertainment. The XRGB2 and bulky CRT monitors stayed with me for many moves until last year when I finally was able to afford a 720P TV from Costco. The JP21 cables were the heroes, but no one uses them that I feel lucky to have one of the small batch JP21 edition gSCARTsw and I don't foresee anyone else using that due to the unpopular format.

Well, preference is an opinion. The consoles like the original Playstation was designed with RGB out without any additional modifications. Sure, some systems may not have the cleanest signal but they did utilize the format.

Not true at all. I used Micomsoft's XRGB2 back in the mid-90s as all I had was a computer monitor and no TV. Rent was still high, so it was more cost effective and more practical than a large screen TV for moves around. In fact, that's when I got these cables. They even had magazine articles about RGB output then.

Sometime recently, somehow the Euro standard became the one everyone used. Now I got to hunt down a lot of JP21 to Euro SCART adapters. Back then I went with JP21 as that is what was available to me for a good picture. People must really like how games were in Europe that it became the defacto standard everyone uses. Though lately, it seems people prefer moving on from Euro SCART to component, which seems like a theoretical downgrade, but it seems like people really like it and it could be better in some way I have not seen.

That looks more like marketers/advertisers to me.

Well, it was probably a lot more than that. I just haven't given the thought of the total amount much time. It was definitely a lot of money.

Once this pandemic is cleared, I will try to start saving up for the soldering tools. I hope by March 2021 I should have enough to get started.

The NES deluxe set came with the RF cable 30 years ago. These days I use my Super Retro Trio which comes with standard RCA AV cables. Its NES output even with S-Video is composite only.

I still want a large BVM, but out here in the middle of nowhere we never had any TV production nor hospital that spent for broadcast monitors. I'd have to import one from California which would cost thousands at this point.

>>6123592
It is the JP21 standard, which not much is made for that pinout these days.

Back in the late 90s, I only knew about JP21, and the only switch was the Selecty21 boxes. When the gSCARTsw was announced, everyone was getting rid of their Selecty21 to upgrade and the 4 I had ranges from $15 to $40USD so they were not expensive when everyone decided to transition to Euro SCART for the device and its wonderful features. Later the gSCARTsw was tried in a JP21 edition, and it finally gave me a 2nd option, but now it is outdated since modern gSCARTsw (standard Euro versions) has way more features like sync regeneration and passthroughs which is why I recommend it to OP.. It is just cheaper to go Euro SCART and based on my experience with the gSCARTsw [JP21] I am sure the standard version will fit OP's needs.

I know, daisy chaining Selecty21s sounds silly, but since they are the only JP21 switch boxes and they only have a meager 3 inputs and 1 output, it is just hilarity the level of toggles on these mechanical switch boxes to get a signal through. Like those cheap component and HDMI switch boxes pictured, they are mechanical, and I thought it would be nice that they take in no external power for electronical noise. However, I have not attempted the absurdity of hooking up the Selecty21s to the gSCARTsw JP21 edition but that would be even funnier. Maybe one day. For now, it is nice for me that the Super Retro Trio does combine SNES, SFC, GB, GBC, GBA, Genesis, MD, Master System,, and NES,for a singular output wire.

A different standard was used. Different pinout, despite looking similar.

>>5316357
Or someone old like me, when that was all that was available. Life is suffering now, as no one makes things for the Japanese standard. The gSCARTsw made for the Japanese pinout was made in only 1 batch and I regret only being able to afford one. The gSCARTswhas since gained new revisions and improvements that I miss out on using Japanese RGB cables. It would cost too much to switch over to the Euro standardm

My eyes are not that attuned to detect the slight variations as I do not have a side-by-side option. Despite the differences from 4:4:4 to 4:2:2, I cannot really tell off hand.

My eyes are old, and what I prefer to see is different from what most deem how it should look. I remembered NES games in 4:3, but the kids these days like seeing the 1-to-1 pixels in 8:7 or stretched to 16:9. I prefer sharp clear pixels as my mind interpreted the visuals rounded, but it seems that the experts with graphics prefer or just opt a blurred and smoothed 2xSAI or Super Eagle. I guess my generation sees things differently, so I cannot be one to judge how things look.

I think playing the games is the important part. There are options for those who like a more crips image with vibrant colours.

I have been looking around for a BVM A20F1U for a few years now and there are none to be had out by me. They all go for a few thousand now. No freight carrier would take one up into the mountains/woods either, so I am SOL. The upscalers are there to at least allow me to continue enjoying the few games I do have, so I think they are worth their prices.

Different regions and their cost of living is not scaled well with the pay. Out here that's a lot. Life is suffering.

>>4719370
The $7.25/hr is the national minimum wage here in the USA. I would imagine it is difficult to be naturalized to a better country, and the cost of a move well beyond my means. Education would require aptitude and funding which I have no means of attaining.

I am envious of your earnings, especially in relation to mine. I acknowledge kids are a financial burden more than maintaining my sanity from my work, but it can't be much more.

As the pic states. See official ones (my Playstation one is not official) ...

I always thought the dithering was sort of like a hatching/cross-hatching/stippling style of shading. I didn't have a TV, so I relied on VGA monitors to be my display for my computer and consoles (through XRGB2).

The only time I know of where a developer states they intended the dithering to be blurred was that Lion King video. It is strange since that game was also on DOS, but did not take advantage of the additional colors beyond what the consoles can render yet continued to use the dithering even though computers often displayed on sharp VGA monitors.

Anyway, just play the games in whatever way makes you happy.
