Limited continues is good because getting sent to the title screen is a good stopping point to go out and do something else. Unlimited continues only encourages people to sit around for hours continually retrying the same level until they brute force it.
>But you can stop anytime with unlimited continues!
While true, most people will be unwilling to lose any "progress" they've made with the game. Hence why you see some posts in here deriding limited continues because it loses their progress within the game past tricky portions. If they attained a certain amount of proficiency of the game then the player will be bringing more health, lives, and continues to later portions when they've gotten much better at earlier portions. Not only that but wanting to speed things up will make the player discover alternative strategies to get through portions of the game faster to speed through certain sections of a level or attempt to get faster kills on bosses.

Is it feasible for all games? No, it all depends upon game length, so obviously something like a long action adventure game like a Zelda game wouldn't mesh well with lives and continues.
