That's very fair, I think had I played it at a younger time in my life it may have sucked me in more. I was 27 or 28 at the time so it was competing with a lot of other things both games and otherwise. Also I'd recently finished Breath of Fire 4 which I'd loved and visually I found DQ7 actually hard to look at I found it so ugly.

Probably because it still doesn't feel sublime in any way. As I've said many times, I agree with several of the Zelda examples. LttP and Wind Waker particularly. The issue here is that I don't feel that way about every single Zelda location, and for some reason some people here simply can't handle that and I find it a little funny and a little weird how high a pedestal they put the games on.

That's better on Sega CD anyways.

Tales of Destiny is solid
Breath of Fire 3 and especially 4 are fantastic
Valkyrie Profile
Legend of Dragoon is generic but decent

I find III a little dry to be honest. The pacing is slow, the characters didn't interest me much, and I found the world rather typical. I think it's a fine game but nothing amazing.

IV suffers low difficulty like III which holds it back but the world and story are far more interesting I feel. I feel IV has genuinely memorable plot points and moments that I still think about well after I played it.

As someone who feels like they've outgrown the genre I feel Dragon Quest III (snes version), Metal Max Returns, and Breath of Fire IV are still excellent.

Not retro but SMT: Nocturne and Mother 3 are both well worth playing.

>Even today, I'd rather replay something like Ark The Lad II or Shiroki Majou than a FF, I'd rather replay Chrono Cross

You may well be more experiencing genre burn out more than a specific dislike of FF. I used to quite like jrpgs abd though the ffs weren't my favorite many times I did enjoy several and thought they were good entries in the genre (2,3,5,6,9). However as time went by and many were played I completely burnt out on the genre as a whole and now find any new one I've tried impenetrably boring.

Though that's not to say that personal taste doesn't also play a big role. I know DQ has many fans and I enjoyed the first three to a degree but every one I tried after felt like pulling teeth trying to get into it.

My philosophy is that I know there's not nearly enough time to play everything, or even everything I want so if a game isn't actively enjoyable on some level I drop it fast.

BoF4 is a masterpiece. I have no idea how you got Xenogears jumbled up with it though. Most of the writing in most PS1 games was shitty.

I haven't watched that but in my opinion the story/characters are the best part. It is a slow build, but if you go with the flow it's excellent.

Think of the pacing like Dragon Quest but instead of being cheery and charming, it's foreboding and melancholic. It's probably not for everyone, but I think it works really well.

This
I definitely prefer BOF3 but I'll be damned if this isn't the best blend of 2D and 3D on the PS1
