Mizzurna Falls.

Doki Doki Poyatchio comes close too, but it's a really small town.

Human kinda ripped off Twin Peaks completely on Mizzurna Falls. It plays a little different since there is no FBI agent, but it's like you are playing Twin Peaks The Game from the perspective of James.

Actually lots of japanese games were inspired in american movies, you can find a lot of references in this japanese site.

No, some games did it even better on more limited systems.

Mizzurna Falls OP, it will blow your mind. If I have to compare it with a recent game I'll say it's more like Deadly Premonition, but the Twin Peaks aspect is more inspired in James side rather than in the FBI agent. It has some nasty bugs too, but it's really awesome what Human achieved on a PS1.

Boku no Natsuyasumi is another unique experience, the game uses a lot of references from Stand By Me, you are just a kid who spends his vacations with his uncles and there are different events each day, besides some minigames.

Yuuyami Doori Tankentai. This one is a Survival Adventure, let's just say it's kinda like Twilight Syndrome evolution, you have a group of kids who have to investigate different urban legends and solve mysteries, some of them are fake, some of them are real. If you are looking for a copy of this game expect to pay over a hundred bucks.

This is an odd one, but try Mizzurna. It's pretty cool.

Fair warning: It's in Japanese, but you can follow the storyline with an online walkthrough. Don't spoiler yourself, though.

Actually this was not the first game to use this system... Mizzurna Falls on the PS1 was released a year earlier and has a similar system.

This is another favorite I have. Mizzurna Falls, it's like a proto-Deadly Premonition. Funny trivia, this game was made by the same guy who made The Firemen on SNES.
