Visual novels stem from the interactive fiction genre. If they were games you wouldn't be calling them visual novels as a means to distinguish them from games. They didn't "become" this way, it's just what they are. Publishers get fussy about it and try to conflate the terms so that they can be sold in the same marketplaces games do, but that seems to be about it.

Act as if you're not doing that saying that a game isn't a thing unto itself but instead itself coupled with external factors. A game is a game, a player is a player, a game is not the combination of both but instead the thing the players play. You're saying otherwise and I just don't agree with that. Where have I tried to redefine anything?
