Why shouldn't the Genesis be able to handle it? Even the 8-bit computers had actual 3D games way into the 80's. Heck, because of the technical limitations of the earliest vector monitors some of the earliest video games were actual 3D (just with wire frame graphics like Star Wars Arcade games from 82/83).

Indeed it was done in the 80's, but Out Run is a bad example

As always Nintendo was very late to the party, yet it's fans claim otherwise. Especially the earliest games pretty much used 3D graphics (and analogue controls) because of technical limitations. When vector displays were cheaper than bitmap ones, it was easier to do quasi 3D wireframe graphics since you only could draw so many lines on those monitors. The Star Wars Arcade games were good examples of that. The Arcade game "I, Robot" - now that was a revolutionary game with it's filled 3D graphics in 1983

Actual 3D graphics (in contrast to the flat mode-7 effect) were already popular on most of the 8-Bit machines, i.e. The Sentinel or the Freescape Engine games like Driller, Castle Master, Total Eclipse etc.

Finally with the 16-bit home computers those 3D graphics finally became more fluid with FPS higher than one digit. Right after the SNES was released the Amiga already had a proto open-world 3D game with Hunter
