Assuming by "golden age" you mean up to the mid-'80s then it is without a doubt Galaga. My soul was crushed the day my shitty local arcade finally got rid of that machine several years ago as it was literally the only game I would go there to play. I'm a big fan of shmups in general but in spite of its more primitive control Galaga has a far more interesting and addictive scoring system than any of the full-fledged scrolling games that came immediately after it.
