It' wasn't that uncommon for kids to not be lazy worthless sacks of shit back then. I delivered newspapers, did baby sitting, yard work, recycled shit, etc and in 1980 was making at least $300/month, which was a fuckton back then. And I was also not retarded enough to waste quarters when machines were happy to take pennies with a little coaxing. It was basically impossible to not git gud when the only limiting factor was how much free time you were willing to spend on it.
And some of us were particularly lucky. One of the guys on my paper route had a bunch of machines he placed in local shops on a revenue sharing basis. When they broke down he'd take them home, repair then, and let the kids in the neighborhood play them for free to test them. I already had a good understanding of electronics so I helped him do repairs in the exchange for training and eventually got into that business myself.
In 83 I got a job working a couple days a week after school. Pay was great and they had a bunch of machines set up free to play. The work was very tedious manual labor so taking 15-20 minutes out of each hour to play was ok, encouraged even.
