Unironically anything by Compile. I would compare most of their games to the difficulty of Super Mario Bros. It'll tale some effort at first, but you can play through it organically and clear it within a few hours or days depending on how good/bad you are at shmups.

Most of their shit is aesthetic as fuck and has good soundtracks to boot. You can't go wrong with:

GG Aleste 1, 2, and especially 3
Gun*Nac
Gunhed/Blazing Lazers
MUSHA
Super Aleste/Space Megaforce

The fact that even mentioning their name causes impassioned shit storms and big "REEEEE" energy by those autistic gate keepers who'd rather grind quarter munchers with save states for hours on end tells you everything.

Compile fucking rules.

The Aleste Collection kicks SO MUCH ASS because it has an option to use overclocking which erases all flickering and slow down. Completely breathes new life into the games and makes them more challenging. The options for filters, save states, etc. all built in....so good. God bless M2, holy shit. And yes, as others have said, it works perfect with yuzu. I wish they'd allow it on the American e shop or Steam. When they do that they'll have my money.

Blazing Lazers, MUSHA, Gun Nac, and others are all classics for a reason. They are fun as fuck.

There are new people discovering them every day thanks to /vr/ as well as ShmupJunkie. They are absolutely having a blast and a better time than you here seething.

And there is nothing you can do about it.

Also Thunderforce III. You'll have to memorize the levels (where enemies out of) more than any of the Compile stuff, but once you do the gameplay is very easy.

ChoRenSha68k is a good doujin PC shooter as well.

Compile gets a lot of hate on this board from shitposters, but if you didn't grow up with shmups (I did not), Compile is an excellent way to learn some basics before moving on to Arcade and bullet hell stuff.

Giga Wing and Batsugun are good for when you want to start delving into more arcade difficulty.
