I was wondering how long it would take for the OG to get his due. 6 posts in isn't too bad.
>first home console was a late-issue SNES received as a Christmas gift in 1996
>under the wrapping paper on the console's box was Bowser's SMRPG render
>immediate desire to find out what game that cool, spike-shelled dragon is from someday
>end up getting Super Mario All-Stars from a relative and boot it up on New Year's Eve
>dragon is on the title screen; he must be in one of the games in this collection
>eventually reach world 1-4 some time later (that night was spent dying a shitload on 1-1 and 1-2)
>a fireball streaks across the screen
>portraits of the dragon show up in the BG
>he's here in the flesh (but actually wasn't, as I would discover at some point by killing him with fireballs, but it didn't matter at the time)
He's been my hero ever since. I'm 31 now and still want to be him when I grow up. I got SMRPG on the following birthday, and it became my favorite video game to this day.

Am I being reverse trolled or something? Would you rather me straight out call those games shit?

I can at least say that Banjo-Kazooie is certainly better than Banjo-Tooie, if only because the sequel had too much scope but not enough focus. The levels were larger, sure, but they managed to be less dense than the ones in Banjo-Kazooie. Not to mention that more of the Jiggies in the game came down to mini game shenanigans instead of through actual feats of platforming. Not that Banjo-Kazooie ever demanded much from the player in that regard either, but Tooie just handled it poorly.

Donkey Kong 64 just took things even further down the wrong direction by limiting who can collect what while still further ostracizing the game from the platformer genre. I'd sooner call this an Adventure game than what I would associate as a platformer. Not that the "Adventure" genre is well defined by any means, but it certainly isn't a rewarding experience as a platformer.

The soundtrack is astoundingly good. People always talk about Forest Maze but the whole thing is amazing from start to finish.

I think it's the first video game I truly fell in love with for reasons other than "the gameplay is fun". One of pillars of the SNES library.

>Is SMRPG really that great?
It's wonderful. Basic but wonderful.

>I hear its better than Paper Mario
It's arguable. They're pretty different. Paper Mario has better mechanics and story, SMRPG is endearingly strange. Both have amazing aesthetics, and yes fuck you the pre-rendered 3D looks great even to this day.

SMRPG really set the tone for all the Mario RPGs that came after it. It made Bowser into a lovable underdog, and all of the goofy lighthearted humour is there.

You should play it
