Yes, the gameplay is tight if you like arcade-ish flight simulation.
The sequel is also recommended.

Pilotwings 64 had such a lasting impression on me when I first played it. I don't know if it would pack as much of a punch now, but dear god do I ever love this game. This music hits me in the nostalgia feels every single time.

Pilotwings 64 is a great game, as a kid I only scratched its surface really, I only fucked around flying with the gyrocopter/birdman/jetpack, but never really tried to get golden badges or unlock all the extra missions.
This year I got around to playing it again after a lot of years, and I managed to get gold in all missions. Really challenging and satisfying, the gameplay is a good mix of simulation and arcade-ish controls.

The jumble hopper missions are so god damn fun, I'd play an entire game with these physics.
