III is way more popular, even though IV is the better game. Both have too much filler and are too easy but IV has a better combat system and story.

Best one is 3. Peak jRPG comfy (characters only have 4 stats). Jazzy OST, cool dragon system and characters

After this, you can check 1 and 2. 1 is barebones but fun, 2 is a little broken, but have a good and dark plot

4 have the best pixelart in any videogame ever. But the dragon system is lame, and I personally hate the camera and always get stuck in corridors

5 is the controversial one, is kind of a roguelike

They do look awful, great games but aesthetically they look terrible compared to the better looking CPS2 and CPS3 games. Capcom can do good 2d on 3d though, BoFUV looks beautiful for instance.

>IV is the best in the series by a mile
Fixed.

Even then this thread is clearly for BoFII only so let's stay on topic.

I know the thread has been focused on PC-98 stuff but the OP does say pixel art for any pixel art.

I can't avoid uploading BoFIV stuff when pixel art threads come up, it's too beautiful.

Kinda similar to you, mother and SMT are my two favorite series and I quite like pokemon for the most part. Here's some other jrpgs I like.

Dragon Quest III- DQ was basically the inspiration for Itoi making Mother, you really owe to yourself to try them. DQIII is a classic of the series and DQ plays like Mother so it's nothing unknown to you. DQIII allows you to create your own party and is nonlinear in some aspects, giving it some replay value. Play the snes version, best version by far.

Metal Max Returns- This is basically if Fallout and Earthbound had a baby. It's a post apocalyptic setting but made very humorous with weird and creative monsters. You play a simple kid who wants to be a bounty hunter and make it big. You will ride around in various tanks you can customize as you hunt down wanted criminals. Overall a ton of fun.

Breath of Fire IV- Beautiful art, good story and cast, and an interesting world make this one good. It has a great combo system that lets you combo different magic spells together allowing a ton of experimentation in battle.

Breath of Fire IV's combat is really fun. Magic, both offensive and defensive, can be combined into "combos" that make spells either stronger if offensie or boost/add on to the spell if defensive. Another cool aspect is the row system. You get six characters ultimately and anyone can be used at any time. You have a front row and a back row with three each. The front row is your actual active party while those in the back row restore mp and may occasionally do some kind of special character specific action. When you want to switch someone from the back to the front all you do is select the desired character on your turn and the characters will swap instantly. It's fun as this allows you to change up a strategy, and change up your potential combos, constantly during a battle. There's also masters who you can enlist characters under that will allow you to control how a character's stat growth works. If that isn't enough you can even learn specific skills from different enemies, these tieing into your potential combos.

Sadly, while mechanically solid, the game is pretty easy and you can play it with little thought. Pulling off cool combos is more of something that is more of a cool payoff to players rather then a necessity to beat the game. The final dungeon picks upnrhings considerably but still.

A great game in general, can't suggest it enough.

What do you guys feel is the best looking game? Not even just from a technical perspective, aesthetic level too.

Breath of Fire IV's animations just blow me away, they're just so smooth
