I think it has something to do with how Westerners understand their own culture on a fundamental level. So a lot of things are looked over and taken for granted meaning most of the unique additions are added ontop like how Might and Magic is generic fantasy with a ton of sci-fi ontop. Meanwhile in Japan it's an outsiders perspective so they can change things most Westerners wouldn't even think about more intuitively. Plus they can reference their own culture. A lot of Japanese games are a mish-mash of Western media and Japanese media. Vice versa happens like pic related but it's a lot rarer, although maybe not as much lately since anime is way more mainstream now.
