I was surprised about the controls. They're basically proto-Smash Bros. Even master hand boss fight is there (in unga bunga form).
Really great game.

Would rather kill myself. Did people know that they were playing in 50hz in the late 80's early 90's?

I always dismissed Kirby as a series without any challenge, but truth be told, the only Kirby games I played, and only a few levels, were Kirby's Adventure on NES and Epic Yarn on Wii, but again, I didn't really play much of them, but thought the first couple levels were very easy and lost interest.
Then comes Superstar. I played this for the first time a little over a year ago. The first set of levels, set in the woods, was like the NES game as far as I remembered. Very easy, but it served as an introduction to the controls, I don't remember much of the NES game, but I was surprised to find Superstar had proto-Smash controls, with a dash function, and different kind of attacks, depending on if you were standing/walking, or dashing/tilting, just like Smash. Also up and down attacks. It was far deeper than I originally expected, and coupled with all the different abilities, I found myself enjoying the game a lot, not caring about the lack of difficulty, just experimenting with the controls.
Then the second game, Dyna Blade, felt like a slightly more challenging set of levels, still pretty easy but gave incentive to keep playing due to ingenious level design, interesting enemies and a cool boss fight.
Then came Great Cave Offensive, and this is when I started to really love this game, it was like a metroidvania, and the bosses were actually pretty good, lots of enemy variety, secrets, it gives you a lot of incentive to be creative and experiment with different abilities. And bosses can pose a threat when you're trying to get from point A to B while maintaining the same powerup and you have to fight them in between. Here is also where you fight the boss that's essentially proto-Master and Crazy Hand on Smash. Except he has an actual face here.

I was honestly surprised at how good SS is.
The controls are buttery smooth. It actually is proto-Smash, it's kind of crazy.
