>Expensive
Only as expensive as you like to make it, I exclusively buy games I like and see myself playing, and sell off everything else.
Don't keep games you hate for sentimental value or nostalgia, drop everything you don't like and your house won't look like a hoarder.

I only buy my games under their asking price as well, if I can't get a good deal I won't get it, that way I can realistically sell my entire collection and make more money than what I paid for everything. Never go for expensive solutions and allow yourself to make concessions such as getting games on cheaper devices rather than one that is incredibly expensive, such as Chrono Trigger on the SNES when there's no real reason to do that.
What would also help a lot is if you allow yourself to partially digitize your collection by buying games on platforms such as Steam, GOG, and Origin, and just buying whatever other games weren't ever (properly) ported to PC on their respective system.
Lastly, don't ever go down the accessories or goodies rabbit hole and never buy any figures, magazines, posters, or special editions.
Do NOT try to lively up your collection with useless shit like that, it's unnecessary, overly expensive, and it's money better spend on getting the games you want.

Do all of that and your house won't look like an autistic manchild stuck in the late '80s to late '90s. It'll look like a respectable hobby and not like you are some hardcore purist with an obsessive hobby that is going to turn his house into an unlivable mess.
