I like how RTCW bundles its most unrealistic elements with enough realistic context so as to never cross that threshold where suspension of disbelief is strained to its breaking point and tossed aside by the player. As ridiculous as the plot is on paper, the way it's presented is totally straight with even the most open-minded members of the OSA (the director and Jack) being skeptical of the reports until BJ's first-hand accounts lend credence to it all. The cutscenes are as exciting as a History Channel documentary, but what they're discussing in the cutscene is anything but ordinary war strategy drivel. It's just a boringly realistic depiction if you were a fly on the wall listening in on a meeting that was talking about the typical stuff...undead rising from their graves, diabolical mutant scientific creations, and the resurrection of an ancient king to build an unstoppable army. As the player, we're kept in the dark and only come across the wacky stuff the same time BJ does. If anything, the game is constantly trying to lull the player into a false sense of security of being a typical WW2 shooter before pulling the rug out from under them time and time again. You might read a document here or overhear a conversation there about some crazy shit and be put on edge, but after a couple levels of standard-fare missions, you forget about it. The mature groundedness is the foundation that gives the game its atmosphere and the space for the fantastical elements to be so memorable.

Yeah definitely, especially the electrical bastards they're pretty unfair. Flamethrower is great against them even though it doesn't deal direct damage (it does in RealRTCW btw). You can just tick them with a plume of a flamethrower fuel and then run away to safety while they burn to death.
