It's one of those "Gen X joked about it; Millennials took it seriously" sort of things. Like half of all D&D tropes being contextless jokes being taken at face value.

"Nintendo hid this game from us! I'm so betrayed!!: and "This is unplayable trash!" were just jokes. They were excited to get a new Mario game; especially one that was "Mario: Hard Mode". Hell, the Super Mario Maker games and people loving Kaizo Mario show that people have no problem with hard Mario games.

But a lot of Millennials took it to heart and will fight for the honor of which ever one they believe to be the "true" SMB2. Meanwhile, Gen X was more like the bottome of picrel.
