The NES cart on the cover is deceitful because the bulk of this book is about 2nd gen games, but still a good read nonetheless.

Despite the NES cartridge on the cover, a good 70% of this book actually discusses 2nd gen titles, but still a good read from a passionate author.

This one is decent, but the NES cartridge cover is misleading, because about 70% of it covers 2nd gen games.

Here's a book I own which I recommend. Don't let the NES cart on the cover fool you, a vast majority (something like 80%) actually covers second gen console games. It describes what gameplay is like, cites other sources which discuss the games, and also has the author's own personal thoughts. And best yet his writing comes across like he has an actual college education.

I have this book. Written by a guy who clearly was huge into games during the Atari age. There's only about 10 NES/Master System games in here, so if you're looking for lots of 2nd gen recommendations and also explanations as to why they're good, it's a fun little read.
