I get that perfect square maps are cool and all for autism purposes and pretty to look at as a whole but they are inorganic as fuck and they really force developers bend their vision and create filler just for the sake of fitting the shape.
At the end of the day areas are not designed to be seen at the same time so freeform maps really sell the feel that is there so much more to the world beyond what you see in game.

this might qualify

there is a grass area that you can only reach if you have performed the safari zone glitch that makes you able to walk through walls. you can even encounter pokemon there. its south of the northern entrance to viridian forest (just walk through the house).
