i had this amazing snes game which had four of the mario games in one for snes. i never really realized that super mario bros 2 was originally on the NES because i rarely ever played NES.

saw someone playing the NES version of it recently and gotta say the snes version of the game is so much better.

Should I get this or just play the original NES games?

How hard are they and how do they hold up?

how come only 1st or 2nd party platformers have any degree of technical or artistic competency? I'm aware there was a glut of also ran mascot platformers but that alone doesn't explain why the bulk of this genre is just plain mediocre.

Give it to me straight bros: Is there any difference at all in physics, hitbox size/shape, and collision detection in these games compared to the original? Some people insist there is, but others are very steadfast that they are completely identical beyond the superficial appearance.

(Obviously I know about the physics bug in SMB1 in regards to jumping and hitting blocks. That can be fixed with a romhack, and I'm not talking about that.)

Which versions of old Mario games are best? I want to play them all via switch online but I'm not sure. I played smb1 and lost levels on game boy color years ago, but I'm not sure where to play the nes versions of these or the all-stars versions. The same applies to 2 and 3.

Are there any major differences between snes and nes versions of these games other than graphics? Which do you prefer and why?

If this doesn't count, then Kirby's Adventure.

Also, this thread is incredibly eye-opening as to why this board is like it is. Not that I'm not part of the problem of course.

This one is pretty good. These versions of the games are better than the NES originals. This collection is probably my favorite Mario game.

>also, considering they made so many Mario + Duck Hunt and other multi game cartridges, they could easily have done that with this and the first one. basically making it Super Mario Bros plus an added optional challenge, that way they wouldn't alienate consumers with a game perceived to be unfair, or whatever reason they were afraid of releasing it outside of Japan.
This is a great point but recall how ridiculously and retardedly conservative Nintendo has always been. They're still in the mentality of a toy company, even in 2020 they feel light-years behind other game companies and blunder their way through everything.

I think the decisions they make back-fire: you speak of multi-carts at the time, but remember that in 2010 they released Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES on the Wii...as a stand-alone, limited edition disc.

Did this ever feel weird to you? I'll explain. Super Mario All-Stars for the SNES was never officially on the Wii's Virtual Console. Why? One obvious reason: Nintendo wanted people to buy all 3 games it included separately for $5 in their NES incarnations. They figured people would buy Super Mario All-Stars for $8 instead of the other 3 individually. Even after they put it on a disc for $50 they didn't throw it up on the Virtual Console.

Another very relevant example is Super Mario Advance. The first was a port of the All-Stars version of 2/USA, the second was Super Mario World, the 3rd was Yoshi's Island and the 4th was Super Mario Bros. 3. Super Mario Bros. 1 and the 2/Lost Levels was never ported to the GBA with this treatment. It begs the question as to why they didn't make a collection on the GBA that included ports of 1, 2, 3 and the Lost Levels and then separate ones for Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island...and the answer is the same. Drawing it out for more money.

Just finished super mario bros on this. With save states for each level and regularly from world 7 onwards.

What a piece of annoying fucking bullshit. I mean yeah, if I played it in 1985 it would have blown my mind. But in 2017 it sucks. It just fucking sucks. 3 is still pretty damn good, I played it on gba.
