This conversation is missing one key element. I grew up during the era so let me chime in: Damn near 50000 callers a day called into Nintendo's 800 number help hotline to ask for gaming tips.

Let that sink in. For the time and for what the service was, that's crazy. Nintendo was aware of the limitations that caused certain games to be cryptic and they provided services to players.

People still loved this shit back then, and if you manage to have fun with this game and end up loving it despite not being a part of that well kudos to you. Like some have said, asking for a tip stimulates discussion. We all know these old adventure games are flawed and cryptic, but they are still great games. If you can't see it, your loss.
