It's not really necessary to do so but some rarer monsters can be helpful to have. At the same time some very early and/or easy to recruit monsters, like the slime knight, can be used until the endgame.

Supposedly Hori himself told them to stop that. Honestly the translations for the DWII-IV releases are surprisingly good for their age, beside some censorship they're quite faithful.

I only have played the original SFC version, my final team was the hero, son, and daughter. Others in my caravan were borongo and my slime knight for backup and two cure slimes for healing. Personally I find the wives useless, I never liked their characters and in battle from I've researched all of them seem pretty outclassed by other characters. The children are both very good though, I recommend using them.

Likewise I think DQ 1 and 2 are pretty bad, but necessary to bring us 3 and upwards. Still over 20 year old games and still on the fucking NES so shut the fuck up.
