Absolutely. When I get into the flow, stages just run by, but then suddenly one misstep and it is just a string of continual bad luck at once ending the streak. Once you are in the zone, it is a great place to be.

In our meetings, one person brought over a Jaguar. There was AVP and Wolfenstein 3D available, but I only played Tempest 2000. I got a Playstation TV, and the only physical title I got for it was Persona 4 Golden, but there are a lot of digital PS/PSP titles on it.

Once you get on a roll, the stages just go on by, but at some point once your flow is stopped it will spiral down fast.

I remember the Jaguar is the best for having seamless looping music. Since the Saturn version plays the songs via redbook audio, there is a fade-in/out to allow for the track to be re-looped.

I like the way colored vector graphics look. It is really sharp and bright. Wikipedia says it was released in 1981, so by then I like the look of Galaga, Donkey Kong, and Pac-Man better, but that is rasterized form of graphics different from the vectors made by the beam in Tempest. They all have their own positives and look great to me.

Its version plays the songs continuously. The Saturn port plays the songs via redbook audio, so there is a slight pause when the same song has to loop and the laser has to seek back to the start of the track. They did choose good endpoints such that it is least noticeable. Wish there was a way to use a dial to play the game like the original arcade.

I am not in favor of the changes they made for the Playstation version. The visuals has that blur psychedelic look which overpowers the gameplay to me. The music took a step down too on X3. It was a fine sub-$5USD pickup, but I was hoping it would be the next step from 2000. I remember first playing 2000 on someone's Jaguar and was impressed enough to get the Saturn version. The Saturn disc has spent more time in my CD-player than in the Saturn for play. I find 2000 really addicting to play because of the music, but X3 on Playstation does not capture me the same way. Before this world health crisis hit, a local used bookstore had Tempest 4000 for $15USD on the Xbox One, I hope they still have copies for less once the quarantine is lifted for less because I want to try it out once I get the system.
