Not sure about hardware specifications, could be that yeah, but also, one of the main things of the GB micro is that it looks sleek and aesthetic as fuck. Having a regular Game Boy cart stick out of it would look unaesthetic.
You can still get a flashcart and load GB games from it.

Is this some romhack? If it was actual SNES/SGB emulation it'd still have the upper and bottom border frames.
