Name your top three (or five) favorite retro FPS games. Let's hear some opinions and see what games are generally liked the most.

I'm curious; how old were you anons when you first played Doom, and what version/port/etc did you first play on? You can also mention what your first shooter game was in general.


I first played Doom on the XBLA port when I was maybe twelve or so, it was a game I had always heard about but had never truly seen before due to most of my childhood years being spent playing older systems like the SNES or PS1. At the time, the only experiences with FPS games I had were playing Wolf3D on the 3DO as a young child (which was my first FPS) and playing Half-Life 2 about a year prior, but I had a blast playing the game and was mesmerized by its gameplay and environments.
Fast forward about a year and I found Doom 2 on Steam, played it through, then another year later I found out about modern source ports and replayed the games again, and slowly got more and more invested into map making and the mod scene. Doom had me hooked by the very first few levels, hooked harder than anything else, and I've loved it ever since. Even two decades later, you still hear about people getting hooked on Doom after playing it for the first time.

So generic question here, but I'm genuinely curious: what was your favorite episode from Ultimate Doom? And what was your favorite map from each episode?


I've always found Inferno to be the most enjoyable to play through as well as the most thematically pleasing, the levels are all so memorable and enjoyable to play through, and some of the levels got me really immersed in the hell theme when I first played Doom years ago. All the episodes are great, but I think Inferno is the strongest of the four.
E1M6, E2M2, E3M3, and E4M2 are all my favorite maps from each episode. The latter three are all within my top 10 maps from official Doom games, and E3M3/E4M2 are both within my top 3 for sure.
