>I often see this stuff being called "investment" but is that really true? a lot of this stuff is pretty much dying (i'm recapping my Mega CD as we speak) so I honestly have doubts that any of this stuff is an investment, who are you gonna sell your AES copy of Metal Slug to in the future?

Optical discs can rot, and longterm life is anyone's guess - coasters, anyone? We generally think ROM chips are safe, but once more this is an ongoing experiment. The bathtub curve for IC failure is a big question on the right side - stuff like static sensitive cmos, excess heat will take a toll. In the worst case, carts will wind up paperweights and a terrible investment.
