I hope you enjoy! It can be quite a challenge and you will have many deaths that come out of nowhere, like in that screen some monster had found a wand of create monster, so on just the 4th floor of the dungeon at level 2 I got one-shotted by an iron golem which is one of the most powerful monsters in the game.

There's luck involved, but you also need to be flexible. For example, each god has a dress code they prefer and following it will get you certain bonuses. But item types are also randomized, so part of the dress code for a wizard includes pointy slippers, but depending on the run those might be boots of speed which would be amazing, but they also have a chance to be squeaky shoes which do nothing but make you louder. In which case I would switch from wizard and follow someone else.

There was a very handy wiki, but this is all I find now and the links seem broken. I will look again for it later though and can answer any questions if you check it out.

Rogue was one of my absolute favorite games as a kid and alongside Fighters, Roguelikes are my favorite genre of games.

I'm going to recommend Powder by Jeff Lait. It was originally designed for GBA but has several ports pretty much all p2f which are free. You can donate to support him but other than supporting the dev all it gets you is a god mode code and ability to save scum which ruins roguelikes anyways.

It's pretty simple like Rogue, make it to the bottom of the dungeon, get the heart of the big bad and get back out with it alive. There's a pantheon of gods who you can decide which one to follow each time you level up and they correspond to various classes. They're all watching what you do though and will help or fuck you over depending on your actions.

A little like FF8, monster spawns are based on your level so you can't really grind to make things easier, victory is about working with what you find and keeping moving. Randomization is done quite well and every run feels fresh which is good because you will probably die a lot, especially early on.

There are a lot of fun mechanics to play with as well. Dip a sword into greek fire to get a flaming sword, or drop a mace in water then freeze it to produce an ice mace that will slow enemies (you have to have a way to get your mace out of the ice though) or make an earth hammer that lets you dig through walls.

A full game is usually 5-8 hours or so so it's pretty quick in that regard and makes dying feel like another opportunity rather than a setback. Overall it's just fast, dynamic and fun. One of those games I've played off and on for over 10 years and every time I pick it up again I find myself hooked.

I'm using mine to play old sega cd games I missed. It's working good for that.

There's also a good port of Powder which is one of the better console/ handheld roguelikes out there.

Well if you're asking about retro games, most things listed as roguelikes will be traditional. Nethack, Abgband, Moria, ToME or Brogue which is newer but also decent are good options. The exception are the Chunsoft Mystery Dungeon games such as Shiren and Chocobo/Pokemon mystery dungeon which are more hybrids with jrpgs. I don't like them but they have fans.

Powder is another semi new (was developed for gba) roguelike that runs well on tablets, it's how I mostly play it now. Decent starting point for the genre.

It was originally made for GBA but is on various platforms now. It's free, but he appreciates donations if you like it.

Powder is a decent middle ground. It's designed to be played moblie and isn't as intricate as Nethack but is much more complex and interesting than Shiren and has a very fun class system. It's also fairly short which makes dying a lot (which you will) easier to take.

Ironically the Android version isn't on his site but just Google for it, I think the link I found came from a reddit thread or something.

It's fairly simple on the surface, just get to the bottom of the dungeon and get back out. It has an interesting god/class system where your class is whatever god you're following but they're all watching everything you do.

Lots of fun weird quirks and strategies to play with, decent challenge but not impossible. It's also fairly anti-grindy, gaining levels too quickly will fuck you over so you always have to be careful about what you kill.

It's free, runs on gba, psp, ds, android etc. Check it out if you like these games.
