/vr/ - Retro Games

Shmups are the quintessential retro genre. No good shmup was made past 1999, and anything pre-1999 needs thick nostalgia goggles to be appreciated. Pic related. How can such a cool looking game with great spectacle be so boring, dry and repetitive? It's a shmup, that's why.

don't bother with any Gunbird ports, with the possible exception of the Saturn Gunbird in TATE. I don't know if that's compromised. I do know that neither Saturn or PS1 has a YOKO version without that ugly screen scroll you mention (and PS1 doesn't have TATE!).

Even the PS2 and the Switch versions are not completely accurate. Sadly it seems like MAME is still the best bet for the Gunbird fan.

Gunbird 2 can at least be enjoyed properly on the Dreamcast. I don't know if the ZeroDiv port is fucked up, but they haven't had the best track record... I think only Dragon Blaze has been said to be without major accuracy issues because the PS2 port was pretty good (and these releases use the PS2 code).

You can start with any shmup first as long as your goals and expectations are reasonable. You could play Futari Ultra and try beating the first stage...

Don't listen to people with tier lists. They want to condition you like society does.

Both are great, though I think Gunbird 2 is a better game. The difference between like a 9 and an 8 out of 10 though. Slight.

Gunbird is easier than the sequel, which helps in recommending it.

In my opinion, the best is probably Gunbird 2 in terms of combining various elements (charge shots, melee, coin chaining, secrets) with still engaging level design and boss fights.

But you can't really go wrong with most of their games.

Is there any way to play this game correctly?
