I'm still salty that Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin 2 got dropped because SEGA thought X-Men was the better licensed IP to go for at the time... it's true that they were right about this, but I still do wish we had gotten a sequel to what was really the only great Spider-Man video game until we finally got Neversoft's title in 2000, maybe it would've sucked, but we can't know for sure.

I mean, we did get Spider-Man: Web of Fire on the 32x and that seems sort of Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin inspired... and it sucked, so maybe this was ideal... but maybe it would've rocked.

Spider-Man on GBC is a surprisingly decent MetroidVania, that oozes a dark atmosphere which works for this story, especially thanks to such a sublime OST and artwork, I recommend it even for those that aren't Spider-Man fans, it's simply a good, even if simple, MetroidVania anyone can play on the go, so much fun.

I like to jerk off to Mary Jane images or comics after finishing a run of this one, especially if it's POV art, to pretend I'm really Peter Parker coming home after saving the day, so immersive, Black Cat sometimes for a threesome.

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin on SEGA Genesis is still the best Spider-Man video game of all time.

I don't get what makes them so bad, sure they're not Streets of Rage 2 or Final Fight, but just like (>>10569626) said it's better than a lot of other mediocre beat 'em ups from the time... the main thing in this genre is that you play it to feel good while beating people up, so that has to feel right, and it does here, mostly due to the SFX, I love it.

It's not a great beat 'em up, not even a good one depending on what you prefer, but bad? No, it's mediocre at least, it does most things somewhat competently... SA is worse, but has co-op at least.

P.S. I really wish we had gotten more Black Cat though... maybe even as a playable character, or MJ making some appearances to give us a bit of motivation and stuff, if you know what I mean...

What can I say? I just REALLY like Spider-Man because both MJ and Black Cat are sexy! SEXY!

>we all know that most modern games (from ~ 2007/08 on) lack 'soul'. but why is that?
I wouldn't blame it entirely on this... but to me, a big part of why I can't stand most modern stuff is developers shoving their agendas/politics down our throats whenever they can, it's so baffling.

Yes, video games have always been political, but not ALL video games, and the ones that were, at least the ones that are still well regarded and haven't aged like milk, tackled more philosophy and asked questions instead of "THIS IS WHAT YOUR VIEW SHOULD BE ON CURRENT TOPIC" which gets exhausting real quick. I'm biased, of course, we all are, but I'm not alone in this one.

I mean, I like Spider-Man and his video games, I play them to do super hero stuff, but the new titles have a BLM mural, a BIPOC mission and a black Spider-Man you play with 50% of the time... what the HELL does any of this have to do with Spider-Man? Why am I playing as a black deaf GF without super powers doing grafitti for political stuff on people's walls? It just so ridiculous now.

You also have a major focus on stories, and they usually suck, full of drama and sexuality stuff.

Also, I can't stand how this direction companies are going in, to please the social justice crowd, has made it so most women, at least in western video games, HAVE to be an eye sore... fuck.

I miss when beauty was seen as a good thing, and when characters were allowed to be sexy too.

I'm not sure, though considering that almost all of the graphics and UI elements in it are clearly taken/inspired by the PS1 duology, I'd say that Mysterio's Menace at the very least counts as a spin-off of the PS1 titles, and it's definitely one any PS1 Spider-Man fan should try out, it's 2D Spider-Man at its best for me, his moveset has everything it needs, and level design is superb.

I think it holds up quite well, recommend you go and replay it for old times sake if you're in a sort of nostalgic mood, from all of the 2D Spider-Man video games I've ever played, it's definitely in my top 3, alongside Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin and Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace... it's just peak 2D Spider-Man action I can recommend to anybody.

P.S. I wish I was Peter Parker and had a bunch of good looking ladies after me for being a hero...

>Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six (1992/NES)
I'm definitely biased because I played this as a kid, but to me, while definitely bad due to having clunky controls that many struggle to get the grips with, while also being 15min long, giving a single continue for players to make up for that and make it more difficult, an OST with a couple of tracks, mediocre graphics even for NES standards, weak level design near the end, also an use of the 1st level's assets on both the 4th and 6th levels... I still love playing it, because getting used to the controls doesn't take long, and when you do it's fun to play as Spider-Man, what also helps is the level design early on, especially the 2nd and 3rd levels, with items to find, going up and down and all around, good bosses aswell... I love playing it.

An open NY is really fun to websling around, I do get the appeal, Spider-Man 2's system especially, with all of that momentum, felt fantastic, but you're right about Neversoft's 2000 installment, it's not only replayable, but was probably the 1st truly stellar Spider-Man video game, I'll never forget my hunt for 100% completion, getting the Quick-Change suit... whoever thought 10.000 points on that training was fair is genuinely insane, I've done it once earlier this year and I'm never doing it again.

>>10165223
Definitely, the 3D especially did wonders for the character and his powers, though I do feel that, besides the Beat 'em Ups, there were a few good ones that felt like the character, mostly the Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin titles, where his powers felt well represented.

>>10165657
I still need to give the GBA stuff the time of day, so far I only did it for Mysterio's Menace due to growing up with the PS1 installments and this sort of being the 3rd installment set in that canon, will download the GBA ROMs today.

>>10166275
Shattered Dimensions reminded me of the last arc in the 1994 TAS, good stuff, also I heard that the DS version is a MetroidVania, which sounds interesting.

>What are you playing right now?
Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin (1991/Genesis)

>is it any good?
Sure! I'm having a good time with it at least, it was the 1st time you really felt like the character, the moveset is perfect, taking photos of the villains for the Daily Bugle so you can pay for the resources to make web fluid, resting in Peter's apartment to restore health, a vast rogue gallery, moody and dark atmosphere with superb graphics and OST... it's just a good time for me.

2D Spider-Man doesn't get enough love, of course the 3D stuff represents his powers and the feel of being Spider-Man a lot better, but that doesn't mean that the 2D stuff, both from the 20th and 21st century, don't have their merits, because they do, and quite a lot.

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin (SMD)
The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin (SCD)
Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six (NES)
Spider-Man (GBC)
Spider-Man 2: Sinister Six (GBC)
Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace (GBA)

A ton of good stuff, and these are just the ones I've managed to beat in the last few years, there are others to play and, while a ton of them really are bad and don't hold up, so many of them are still fun to play even nowadays with all of the 3D stuff we've got after it.

I loved Spider-Man (PS1) when I was younger and still do nowadays, back then I could only get to the end on Kid Mode, or on higher settings with the aid of my older sister, but eventually I managed to master Easy, Normal and even Hard, though there were a few parts that felt somewhat broken, like Tunnel Crawl... but after I decided to go after 100% it's when things got really broken, getting all of the comics was fine, even fun really, and most of the costumes came naturally after finishing every difficulty, but the Quick-Change... getting 10.000 points in that single training type, I'm not kidding when I say that it took me years, but this year I finally did it, though I don't recommend it, still, I'm glad I could complete one of my childhood favorites 100% now, I also did the same with Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro (PS1) which I also grew up with, and this year I went for Spider-Man: Mysterio's Menace (GBA) as it's sort of a spin-off that I didn't play back then, though I'm glad I finally got around to it, as it was excellent and everything I could as from a 2D Spider-Man video game, it feels close enough to the PS1 installments.
