They probably came up with the idea of sheik & naturally decided it was impa's plan/impa taught her ancient skills & lore. that doesnt mean impa couldn't be an old lady necessarily but I guess reworking her from an attendant into a bodyguard made sense in the role. of course having both versions would be great & fit with the time theme but the future is only 7 years in oot so we had to wait until ss for that.

Personally I think young impa is similar enough to sheik to be unnecessary, and an old lady would give oot more variety in its archetypes, so I wonder (though doubt) if impa's design is a repurposed sheik prototype. pic related has an early sheik for example, who even has white hair, but no impa. I don't have any pictures of impa saved from that early in development but idk there probably are some online.

With Wind Waker, the series was beginning to lose its main identity since it led to the clash of several radically different visions for the series which divided the fanbase, later on with Breath of the Wild things became even worse

An early piece of Ocarina artwork shows a fully humanoid fairy, so it's likely that the spherical shape is for two reasons: the first is obviously that it's a lot easier to depict a ball with wings. The second is that Navi is both a character and a gameplay function, so having her be as unobtrusive as possible is necessary. Imagine having a sprite of an actual fairy flying around highlighting points of interest for you with the 64's limited capabilities, it'd look awkward like the Majora's Mask stray fairies.

Play it.
Try to set your mind off prejudices and hype, though. Hype can definitely ruin something for you, or at least have a sort of "fake" disappointiment.
If you've played lots of Zeldas before and you like the formula, yes, there is a chance you'll like this game.

Honestly, I feel like the only thing that might be too esoteric is the trading sequence to find an optional late-game sword, but I was able to figure that out when I was a little kid.

The game is very straightforward about what it wants you to do; you just have to explore and figure out how to do it. Have fun!
