As many replies have pointed out it's much shallower, but I maintain that was actually part of the reason for it's crazy success. This was a different time when fighting games were much newer and the average person wasn't used to that kind of gameplay. Technically Street Fighter is a far better game, but it's also much harder to learn at a competent level and different characters have very different learning curves. It's one of the reasons Ryu and Ken are so eternally popular.

In Mortal Kombat everyone has specials but they're mostly pretty common, pretty well everyone has a projectile and everyone uppercuts the same. Once you've gained basic competence you can pick whichever character you think looks cool and kick some butt. Woe be to the beginner SF player who wants to play Zangief.

I really do think that along with it's aesthetic was what made it so popular at the time. I've told this story here before, but my Mom thought Mortal Mombat was cool after the movie so I showed her how to whoop my friend's butts with Mileena and then fatality. Great times and I don't think it would have been possible with SF.

My mom has always liked games. Back in the day I taught her how to beat my friends on MK2 by being cheap with Mileena. After that she got super deep into Pokemon for a long time. She went to teach English in Korea while I was in college and I'd get these phone calls at the weirdest times where she'd just be calling to ask if her Cubone should learn Bonemarang or the like. In the end sje played most of the games, only really petering out with Sun/Moon. These days it's all Animal Crossing which she got into with the Gamecube but really got obsessed when Wild World came out but is now all about the new one. God damn I love my mom.

You'll hear that it was the gore, but the real thing that made Mortal Kombat so popular is how accessible it is. The characters all play very similarly outside of specials and those are all designed to be easy. Most fatalities tale some skill but they're just meant for showing off.

MK2 is best.

She also had the easiest fatality. I taught my mom to just spam teleport kicks and rolls then randomly sweep or uppercut and she could trounce a lot of my friends then finish cheering "go Mileena eat em.up and spit out the bones!" I think I legit lost some friends over that but they're the kinds of people you're happy to be rid of lol.

My mom has always been interested in games. Back in the day I showed her how to play Mortal Kombat and she would cheese my friends with Mileena and then fatality them yelling "Go Mileena! Eat em up and spit out their bones!" It was always fun to watch.

Later she got super deep into Pokemon and ended up teaching ESL in Korea for a number of years using Pokemon examples in her teaching. She always liked how positive the games are about overcoming challenges etc. I would get these calls at crazy hours of day or night (she's also an insomniac) from overseas just to ask if her Jolteon should learn Pin Missile or the like. It was awesome.

Now she's all about Animal Crossing and that's become one of the ways we keep in touch since she's closer now but about an hour drive away. Now with how things are, her 82nd birthday is in a month, it will also probably be an Animal Crossing virtual birthday.

For about two years I played Mortal Kombat 2 every day at lunch and once beating it with everyone was a breeze I would do random challenges like beating it just with low kicks and the like.

Also only sort of on topic but I played Tetris before bed for many years too and would go to sleep only after getting at least one tetris in a lvl 9, 5 high B game.

Pretty much this. I remember back in the day I taught my mom how to really just spam teleport kicks and rolls while jumping around a lot and she could often beat my friends much to their annoyance. But she could never even do a hadoken consistently let alone a dragon punch or SPD. People think it was the gore, but I maintain that it's ease of entry was a big part of it's huge success.

We did have a regular MK fan around here for a while who would talk about how 1 was the best but he was retarded and thought it was gritty and serious. I never liked any version of 3 much, 2 was the peak in my opinion but 9 was decent.

It's not that anyone looks down playing single player, it's that most people who play fighters more than casually only use single player as training practice. And that getting good at cheesing AI isn't a terribly useful skill, so no one really cares about trying for 1ccs.

This was true in the old days too. I played probably hundreds of hours of single player MK2 on Genesis, and though it was fun the reason I kept playing so much was in large part for when me and friends were playing together.

I remember this scene really impressing my mother who was/is a pretty staunch feminist. She gets beat down but takes it and fights back then wins all on her own merit even killing him. I always thought it was an awesome fight as well.
