I haven't met ANYONE who defended the art style in those mobile games. I honestly think they were better off just slapping an emulator filter over the original and calling it a day.

I'm not 100% clear on how exactly pre-rendered backgrounds are made, but I don't think they could simply be re-rendered at a higher resolution like a 3D model could. I would think they'd have to be completely redrawn.

Anyway, this is a company that apparently believes this is a competent job.
