I've been looking through some concept art for Breath of Fire IV, and it looks way too clean and vibrant to be traditional media.
So this made me wonder was concept art being made digitally in the 90s?
I always had the idea that they had their concept artists work in traditional media then hand those off to 3D modelers and pixel artists.

Interested, anyone else kind of put off bybthe animal people at first? Maybe just me.

III and IV are so fucking pretty. I don't know why they had such a generic anime style for I and II but getting Yoshikawa was great. His art is fucking gorgous. The pic in the OP is one of my favorite pieces of game art ever. IV's designs I find the best overall. Very fantasy but feels unique in that it doesn't seem to lean on a high fantasy or sci fi inspiration.
