I just started this series this year actually.

DQI is very barebones, it's not bad but it's just very small. The map is like 100x100 pixels or something. 5 towns, 4 dungeons and not much else to do but grind and try and find your way. You could complete it in like 4-6 hours if you worked out where everything is. It's a shame the GCCX episode isn't translated, I'd love to see Arino tackle it.

DQII is quite good actually, suffers from a "where the fuck do i go" problem once you get the boat, but I'd say if you paid attention and noted things down you'd get through it without too much issue. It's fun but very very grindy. I had to get everyone to around level 30 before I was safe attempting the final dungeon and that took hours. Combat is painfully slow times and I really hate getting a group of 5 different enemies that just destroy you if they attack first. Great little JRPG otherwise, playing it back in 87 or whenever it came out must've been a treat. The map is like triple the size TOO.

DQIII was really good. I loved a lot about it and I also loved exploring the world once you got the boat. Encounters are still the bane of my existence and I hope to fucking god you can tone them down in later entries, I tried to not use a guide throughout but got stuck with what to do with the change staff, really wish I noted things down when I played since I felt like an idiot after I looked it up. The job system can be a little bit overwhelming if you wanna mixmax everyone but you don't need to do it, I beat the final boss with the same jobs as I started with since I didn't want to bother with it. A decent story as well for what it is. Honestly, a very solid JRPG.

Currently on DQIV and I fucking hate the translation job they've done on everyone, it's actually putting me off the game. Why the fuck has no one translated the PS1 version? I also dislike emulating the DS, but I'm assuming everything important is on the bottom screen with the map on top?
